AET - Award in Education and Training

Start your teaching journey with the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET)—the nationally-recognised first step for anyone who wants to teach or train young people or adults in colleges, private training providers, workplaces or community settings.

CET - Certificate in Education and Training

Step up from the basics and build confident, classroom-ready practice with the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET). This nationally recognised qualification develops your planning, delivery and assessment skills while you gain real teaching experience.

Professional responsibilities: safeguarding, EDI, accessibility and reflective practice.

How you’re assessed:

Written/online assignments mapped to the CET units.
A portfolio of evidence from your teaching.
Observed teaching practice in a real setting (see “Teaching practice requirement” below).

Teaching practice requirement:

You’ll complete a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice during the course, with at least three observed sessions totalling a minimum of three hours.

Typical TQT/GLH: ~360 TQT / ~140 GLH (varies by awarding body and centre).
Delivery: online, blended or classroom.

DET -Diploma in Education and Training

Advance your practice and gain a full teaching qualification with the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET). This programme develops high-level planning, delivery and assessment skills while you build a robust portfolio of real teaching evidence.

Who it’s for:

Aspiring or in-service teachers/trainers in Further Education and Skills, independent training providers, adult/community learning, or workplace learning—especially those ready to take on full teaching responsibility.

What you’ll learn:

Advanced planning for learning, inclusive pedagogy and differentiation
Assessment for learning, feedback and standardisation
Professional practice: safeguarding, EDI, ethics and reflective improvement
Embedding English and maths in vocational teaching (see “Literacy/Numeracy element” below)

Teaching practice requirement:

You’ll complete at least 100 hours of teaching practice with a minimum of eight assessed observations across the programme.

Literacy/Numeracy element (must be included):

Because FE teachers are expected to support learners’ English and maths, our DET requires you to evidence a literacy or numeracy element in your teaching. You can do this by embedding English/maths skills inside your normal sessions (e.g., reading strategies, report writing, functional calculations, data handling) and capturing this in your plans, delivery and assessment. This aligns with current FE initial-teacher-education expectations that trainees hold/secure Level 2 English and maths, ensuring they can support these skills in their learners.

Prefer a deeper focus? You can also pursue specialist pathways such as Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English: Literacy or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Mathematics: Numeracy, which require substantial teaching in the specialist area.
