Level 1 Award in Mentoring

This course is suitable for:

• Individuals new to mentoring

• Staff in schools, colleges, care settings, youth work or workplaces

• Employees offering informal support to colleagues

• Those wanting to progress to Level 2 Mentoring or Coaching qualifications

• Anyone aged 14+ looking to build communication and support skills

 

No formal entry qualifications are needed, although learners should ideally have Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills.

What does the qualification cover?

 

This course provides an introduction to mentoring practice, mentoring skills, and what makes an effective and supportive mentoring relationship.

You will learn how to:
 

• Understand the mentoring process

• Use communication skills to support mentees

• Build positive, safe and professional mentoring relationships

• Create simple action plans

• Recognise barriers and challenges in mentoring

• Review and improve your own mentoring practice

• Understand when referrals should be made

Course Structure

You must complete three mandatory units, totalling 6 credits.

1. Mentoring Practice (2 credits – 16 GLH)

Learn how to:
 

• Write and use a simple mentoring action plan

• Maintain an effective mentoring relationship

• Demonstrate good practice

• Handle difficulties in mentoring situations

• Review your strengths and areas for improvement as a mentor

2. Introduction to Mentoring (1 credit – 8 GLH)

Develop understanding of:
 

• Key stages of the mentoring process

• Personal skills required for effective mentoring

• Respecting individuality and difference

• Why being non-judgemental is essential

3. Mentoring Skills (3 credits – 24 GLH)

Build essential mentoring skills, including:
 

• Stages of a typical mentoring relationship

• Record-keeping and documentation

• Communication skills used in mentoring

• Creating a comfortable, supportive environment

• Understanding boundaries and confidentiality

• Knowing when and how to make referrals
